Carmichael responds to Sky/21st Century Fox merger consultation

A wide plurality of press ownership is vital to ensure that no individual has unjustifiable levels of influence, and to ensure that many different views and opinions are represented by the media. I am concerned that if the takeover of Sky plc by 21st Century Fox goes ahead, this will undermine that plurality of ownership and influence. A cornerstone of our democracy is the free press and this is undermined by allowing one individual undue control of media output.

There are also questions which remain as to whether the Murdoch family are fit and proper people to be in control of such a large proportion of our media industry. There are still questions to answer around what he knew about the practices used at News of the World when it was owned by them, and Ofcom itself had a scathing review of James Murdoch's conduct there describing it as having "repeatedly fell short of the conduct to be expected of him as a chief executive officer and chairman."

I do not believe that it would be in the national interest to allow this merger to go ahead, and so I would ask that you reject it.
