Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has today called on anyone in the isles suffering from significant energy bill hikes to contact his offices or those of his parliamentary colleagues for support. Mr Carmichael made the open invitation following media reports of local people facing energy bills hiked over 200% by suppliers, in the context of rising cost of living issues and price inflation. Mr Carmichael’s office has been advocating for a number of constituents who are struggling with gas and electricity bills and supporting their contacts with energy companies.
Mr Carmichael said:
“Given that we cannot rely on companies to do the right thing unprompted, I would call on anyone who has been hit by unreasonable price hikes to contact our offices so that we can put suppliers on the spot.
“Reports of astronomical energy price hikes are extremely concerning but all-too familiar. It appears that energy companies care less about imposing these hikes on hard-pressed families than they do about being caught.
“There is a great deal more that governments and suppliers could and should be doing to help families get through this crunch period. In the meantime, however, we have to do all we can to help one another.”
