Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has criticised the newly released government report on no-deal Brexit planning. The 155-page document has been shared by the Government as concerns rise that UK negotiations with the EU on a withdrawal agreement have already stalled.
Mr. Carmichael said:
“After much cajoling of the Government to release updated information on no-deal planning, the final product, just three weeks from the threatened date of a no-deal Brexit, is underwhelming. It bears no relation to the reality described by business leaders and the warnings contained in the Yellowhammer documents.”
“This is essentially a political document, designed to present an idealised vision of no-deal Brexit. It is a fairytale, ignoring potential damage to the economy and waving away the complications with unconvincing promises. The devil is always in the details.
“In his preface, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster said that the Government would be “candid about the challenges ahead”. Even just by comparison to the Government’s own Yellowhammer documents, this claim does not stand up.”
