Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has hosted a cross-party parliamentary event on UK fisheries this week, in partnership with the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations (NFFO) and Scottish Fishermen’s Organisation (SFO). Coming on the day the Government announced its Fisheries Bill, Mr. Carmichael said that fishermen would expect Ministers to live up to promises made about an independent fisheries policy after Brexit.
Mr. Carmichael said:
“Earlier this week I reminded Ministers that fisheries could not be treated as a bargaining chip in trade negotiations. I am glad to see that this seems to have prompted some action on the part of the Government, but it remains to be seen whether they have the political will to follow through.
“I remain concerned that, under pressure to get a deal with the EU, the Government will see fisheries as a cheap sell in order to protect other industries. They should know that fishermen around the country will be watching closely.”
