Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has highlighted the important of local family-run businesses at the start of Family Business Week. The event aims to put a spotlight on family businesses across the UK and their role in the economy and the community. Mr Carmichael has tabled a parliamentary motion to support the event.
Mr Carmichael said:
“Family-owned and -run businesses are at the heart of our economy and our community across the UK and particularly in the isles. They are often the centre of island life and our social interactions, with years and decades of community connections – something that cannot easily be replaced.
“As we aim to come out of the pandemic stronger we need to ensure that these vital businesses have the best possible chance to recover. I hope that the spotlight from Family Business Week will be a spur for the government and each of us individually to back our local family businesses.”
