Carmichael regrets ending of EU School Milk subsidy scheme

Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has said that the end of the EU School Milk scheme, following the UK’s exit from the European Union, is bad news. He also warned that similar announcements could follow.

His comments follow advice to parents in Shetland that milk provision will stop in October following the subsidy ending in July.

Mr Carmichael said, “This is bad news but I fear it is not the last announcement of this sort that we shall have to hear. School milk is a nutritional benefit for children and a useful economic benefit for our few remaining dairy farmers. There is an emerging pattern in Brexit where the reality fails to meet the rhetoric.”
