Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has backed a call for entries to the Best Small Shops Competition organised by the Association of Convenience Stores. Owners of small shops around the UK are encouraged to apply to the competition, which celebrates the role these businesses play in local communities. The deadline for shops in the Northern Isles to apply to the competition is Monday 9th September 2019 at 3pm.
Mr. Carmichael said:
“Small shops make up a big part of life in rural areas. They are more than just convenience stores, they are often the last remaining focal point for local communities.
“In the Northern Isles we are especially aware of the impact that local independent retailers have. They are frequently a lifeline service for people in the Isles, and it shows in the close, cooperative way in which these stores work for their customers.”
“I hope that many of our local shops take the chance to apply to this competition. I have no doubt that there’s a lot that other stores can learn from our way of doing business.”
