Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has welcomed news today that both the Scottish and UK governments would extend the provision of free school meals through the summer holidays in light of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Both governments have agreed to fund school meals for those in need following a campaign led by footballer Marcus Rashford. Mr Carmichael joined a parliamentary motion recognising the fundraising and campaigning by Mr Rashford.
Mr Carmichael said:
“I welcome the change agreed by the First Minister and by the UK government to support school meals for children through the summer. We have to recognise the extraordinary success brought about by Marcus Rashford’s campaign. Mr Rashford has used his star power to change the country for the better.
“We have to remember who this is all about as well – children in our community and around the country who will benefit from access to good, healthy food through the summer, whatever their circumstances. Looking after our children in this crisis is the least we can do. As Mr Rashford has said today – ‘look at what we can do when we come together’.”
