Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has today welcomed news that following a rule change on alcohol duty, distilleries around the country are now able to produce hand sanitiser at reasonable prices to combat a national shortage due to the spread of coronavirus.
Mr Carmichael said:
“This is welcome news for the whole country. Local distilleries have been contacting me seeking to clear the path for them to help with the national shortage of hand sanitiser. I understand that the Orkney Distillery has already started production over the weekend.
“Last week I contacted Treasury officials about this issue and even mentioned it to the Prime Minister when I met him on Friday. I am glad that they were able to recognise the need and take swift action. Increasing access to hand sanitiser will have a direct impact on our ability to reduce the spread of coronavirus.”
