Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has today welcomed the release of the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation Sustainability Charter. The document outlines salmon producers’ goal to become a world-leading sector for environmentally responsible food production, and to support Scotland’s 2045 net-zero target.
Mr Carmichael said:
“Salmon farming is a vital part of the Northern Isles’ economy and this charter represents a strong step towards greater long-term sustainability. In times of economic challenge we all benefit from the diverse food and drink offering our communities create.
“We see time and again that food producers in the isles are willing to do the legwork to build businesses that lead the world in quality and sustainability. Governments must do their part as well in supporting sustainable growth and access to export markets.”
