Cookbook of chaos: Carmichael voices concern about growing backlog of EU right to remain applications

Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesperson, Alistair Carmichael MP, has voiced concern after Government statistics showed a major rise in pending applications for EU settled status in the UK. The latest figures show the backlog of pending applications doubled in December from 198,000 to 392,000.

Mr Carmichael said:

“Far too many EU citizens in the UK are still living under a cloud of uncertainty. Boris Johnson promised to automatically guarantee the rights of EU citizens to stay, but he has broken that promise, as with so many others.

“As this enormous backlog shows, this Government’s scheme is anything but automatic. It is yet another recipe from the Home Office cookbook of chaos. It puts thousands of EU citizens at risk of becoming the victims of a new Windrush-style scandal. We must learn from the mistakes of the past.

“EU citizens are our friends and family and contribute massively to life in the isles and across the UK. They must not be left in legal limbo. The Liberal Democrats will keep fighting to protect their right to stay in the UK.”
