Alistair Carmichael MP, Northern Isles has welcomed a deal secured between Serco Northlink and Seatruck, which will see an end to many staff being paid less than £4 an hour, considerably less than the minimum wage of £7.20.
Commenting, Mr. Carmichael said:
"I am pleased that a deal has been reached in this case, but the Hildasay and the Helliar were only ever the tip of the iceberg.
“Many other companies employing seafarers on the North Sea are still paying less than the minimum wage and action is needed to close the loophole which allows this.
“This move follows a long, hard fought campaign from the RMT, and seafarers across my constituency and the Highlands and Islands, and I am glad a deal was able to be reached, but there is more work still to be done to ensure that the minimum wage applies to everyone.”
