Carmichael hosts parliamentary event on fisheries

Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has hosted a cross-party parliamentary event on UK fisheries this week, in partnership with the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations (NFFO) and Scottish Fishermen’s Organisation (SFO). Coming on the day the Government announced its Fisheries Bill, Mr. Carmichael said that fishermen would expect Ministers to live up to promises made about an independent fisheries policy after Brexit.

Delay in helicopter crash inquiry “lacks respect and compassion” – Carmichael

Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has reacted to today’s announcement of a provisional date of 18th May for the Fatal Accident Inquiry into the helicopter crash which claimed the lives of four people off Sumburgh in 2013, saying it “lacks respect and compassion” for the families of the victims. The seven year wait for the inquiry has been described as “deplorable” by Sheriff Principal Derek Pyle.

Fisheries are not Boris Johnson’s bargaining chip with Brussels - Carmichael

Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has called on the Government not to use fisheries as a “bargaining chip” in trade negotiations with the European Union. Speaking after meeting members of the Norwegian Fisheries Select Committee in Westminster and meeting the Chairperson of the European Parliament Fisheries Committee last week, Mr. Carmichael voiced concern that the Conservatives lacked the political will to honour its promises to fishermen over the Common Fisheries Policy.

Carmichael challenges Government to create bespoke Islands Growth Deal funding

Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, today challenged the Government in the House of Commons to ensure a strong and bespoke Islands Growth Deal.

Many across the UK have benefitted from Growth Deals but these have been designed around a sum of money related to population numbers. For the joint proposal by the Orkney, Shetland and Western Isles this would produce a sum of money that would not achieve any significant developments.

Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, today criticised the UK Government’s response to the US assassination of Qasem Soleimani and demanded a comprehensive response to the growing crisis. The killing of the Iranian military leader by a US airstrike in Iraq on Friday has led to rapidly escalating tensions and exchanges of threats by the two countries, while Iraqi MPs have held a non-binding vote to expel foreign troops, including from the UK.

Alistair Carmichael comments on conclusion of EU fisheries negotiations

Fisheries talks must take local communities into account – Carmichael

Speaking as talks get underway in Brussels over 2020 fishing quotas, Orkney and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael has called for greater care to be taken over the impact of quota cuts to local communities. Quotas for North Sea cod were halved last week in the EU-Norway agreement, with a range of other quotas decreasing and increasing.

Liberal Democrat candidate for Orkney and Shetland, Alistair Carmichael, has called for all parties to work with local authorities and business groups to win the strongest possible "Islands Growth Deal" for Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles. International Human Rights Day a chance to stand with Hong Kong and others - Carmichael

Making a statement on International Human Rights Day, Liberal Democrat candidate for Orkney and Shetland, Alistair Carmichael, has used the occasion to highlight the ongoing crisis in Hong Kong and the treatment of the Uighur people elsewhere in China. Hong Kong has seen continuing protests against attempted Government suppression of historical freedoms, while there is growing awareness of the Chinese internment of ethnic and religious minorities like the Uighur Muslims.
