Speaking in the House of Commons, Northern Isles MP, Alistair Carmichael, has said the tragic Orlando shootings represent an attack on the values of all who live in a free society.
In an urgent question from the Home Secretary on the security threat to the UK following the attack, Mr Carmichael said:
“The intended targets of this vicious and homophobic attack may have been the LGBT community of Orlando, but we should regard it as an attack on us all, because in a free society when a group is attacked because they are different and they are a minority, then it is an attack on us all. And I think that is how we should see it.
This is the time for mourning Mr Speaker, but the time for mourning will pass eventually. And when it does, should the opportunity present itself for the Home Secretary to say, as a candid friend to our friends in America, then I hope she will say to them that they really need to look again about the availability of guns in their country.”
