Short extension to EU transition needed to mitigate growing crisis – Carmichael

Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has today joined cross party calls for the Government to seek a short extension of the EU transition period in light of a growing crisis caused by the new variant of coronavirus. Several EU and non-European countries have banned travel and transport from the UK following the Government’s new measures against the new variant.

Mr Carmichael said:

“In a crisis the first order of business is to identify the problems that you can control and those you cannot. We cannot postpone a pandemic but we can postpone the disruption of trading changes landing in ten days’ time. We are having a taste of how harmful a sharp change to imports and exports can be.

“Even for those in favour of Brexit – even those who have decided that a no-deal exit is the only acceptable option to them – we all have to recognise that we are in a growing crisis for the next few weeks that will not be helped by adding a last minute crash out, or even a thin deal. For the good of everyone involved we must step back and give ourselves more time.”
