Carmichael challenges government to answer ethnic cleansing concerns in Northern Gaza
Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael has today in Parliament challenged the government to answer whether it believes that Israel is leading a campaign of ethnic cleansing in Northern Gaza. Speaking during an Urgent Question in Parliament, led by fellow Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran, Mr Carmichael called on the government to clarify its position on the military campaign, which has seen mass evacuations and the destruction of healthcare facilities.
Speaking in the House, Mr Carmichael said:
“Does the government acknowledge that what is happening in Northern Gaza is a campaign of ethnic cleansing, and if he doesn’t, what would he call it?”
Responding for the government, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Hamish Falconer MP said:
“We have been incredibly clear about the position in Northern Gaza, about our deep concerns about healthcare provision, about aid going into the area, about the targeting of healthcare professionals, about the detentions, the importance of transparency of where people are going to be taken, ensuring they have adequate rights to their lawyer, that the International Committee of the Red Cross can see people.
“The situation in Northern Gaza is close to our minds and we have commented extensively throughout the winter period and will continue to do so.”
Reacting after the exchange, Mr Carmichael said:
“The minister may think he is being clear but he could not answer the challenge directly. Whether or not Israel is engaging in ethnic cleansing in Northern Gaza is hardly a trivial question – the government has got to take a view.
“Palestinians must have the right to return to their homes – and ministers must make it clear to Israel that any attempt to establish more illegal settlements on occupied territory will be opposed without reservation.”
