Carmichael welcomes Lerwick shortlisting as Town of Culture

Commenting on the news that Lerwick has been shortlisted by the UK government to be a Town of Culture, Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael said:

“I am delighted that Lerwick has been shortlisted to be a Town of Culture - a testament both to Shetland's existing rich cultural landscape and the potential we have to continue building and expanding on what we do best.

“Whether it is Up Helly Aa, the Folk Festival, Wool Week or any number of cultural institutions and businesses, big and small, Shetland and Lerwick punch far above their weight in what we offer to the wider world. The more support we can get to maintain and grow this, the better.

“I look forward to supporting the next stage of the application however I can in the weeks and months ahead.”
