Carmichael welcomes £20m government investment in rocket firm launching from Shetland
Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has welcomed the news today that the government will make a £20 million investment in Orbex, to support the development of their rocket and delivery of the upcoming launch from SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland.
In announcing the news, the government stated that it is committed to delivering a UK launch capability that brings growth to the economy and benefits communities across the country.
Mr Carmichael said:
“This is welcome news from the government and a further vote of confidence in Orbex and indeed SaxaVord, as we approach the first launches from Shetland this year. Paired with the launch licence for RFA earlier this month this is an exciting moment for everyone involved in the space industry in Shetland.
“The space industry has the potential to drive quality jobs in Shetland, in Scotland and across the UK. Having pressed ministers in recent months over the need for great investment, the announcement today by the government is an encouraging sign that they understand the opportunities at play here. We are fortunate to have significant advantages in this sector – now we have to leverage them.”
