Shetland spaceport partnership welcomed in Parliament
Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, has today lodged a parliamentary motion welcoming the latest partnership agreed by Saxavord UK Spaceport in Shetland, with RFA Space. The partnership is expected to see a first launch from the Unst launch site in late 2023.
Mr Carmichael said:
“It is a vote of confidence that partnerships continue to stack up for the SaxaVord spaceport – a vote of confidence in SaxaVord itself and the community around it. There is quite the race going on to secure the first successful space launch from the UK – if projections for the end of the year hold up then we have a real chance to put Shetland on the map once again.
“Forward-facing sectors like the space industry are crucial to secure the sort of quality jobs the isles need to thrive. There is a role for all of us – business, government and community – to work together and continue to grow these opportunities for the future.”
