Carmichael Calls for Spirits duty cut
Alistair Carmichael, MP for Orkney and Shetland has called for a 2% cut in spirit duty to support the Scotch Whisky industry. Mr. Carmichael made the call in a letter to Philip Hammond ahead of the Spring Budget Statement on 8 March.

Alistair Carmichael, Orkney and Shetland MP, has today hit out at the UK Government’s proposed changes to bereavement benefits, branding them "callous and cruel."
From April 2017 the Bereavement Support Payment replaces the three-tier system of Bereavement Payment, Bereavement Allowance and Widowed Parent's Allowance. However, experts have warned that under the new rules families could be thousands of pounds worse off.

Alistair Carmichael, MP for Orkney and Shetland, yesterday told delegates at the UK’s 2017 Wave and Tidal Energy Conference that renewable energy had the opportunity to thrive, if the Government’s industrial strategy did the right things. Mr. Carmichael spoke and answered questions with other MPs at the event. As well as speaking about the leading role that Orkney has taken in the industry he drew delegates' attention to the future role that marine renewables could play.
“Guantanamo Bay makes us all less safe” – Carmichael
Alistair Carmichael, MP for Orkney and Shetland, today called for the UK Government to clarify whether it will support Guantanamo Bay remaining open in the aftermath of the news that Jamal Al-Harith, who was held and tortured in the detention camp for two years, without charge, had become radicalised and joined ISIL, and committed a suicide attack in Mosul earlier this month.

Alistair Carmichael, MP for the Northern Isles, today demanded further action from the Home Secretary to ensure Britain takes unaccompanied child refugees where they have families in the UK. Speaking about the Dublin regulations, a set of EU rules which determine the member state responsible for an asylum application process, Mr. Carmichael asked the Home Secretary to use the discretionary sections to ensure that any refugees with families in the UK could be reunited.
